Introduce yourself and your business.
Hi! My name is Heather and I am the maker behind Naughty Florals. Naughty Florals is a stationery company that combines classic florals designs and modern sensibilities. By that I mean I paint beautiful floral designs and combine them with rude and cheeky messages.
How did you launch your business & what made you want to start a small business?
I have always wanted to start my own business. When I was a kid I started a spa (where a my mom was my only customer), a sticker business (where I didn't actually sell anything because I loved all the stickers I made too much) and a library (not very profitable). My parents are both entrepreneurs so I think it is on my blood. I launched my first stationery company on Etsy in 2016 which was a bit of flop. I screen printed all of my designs by hand on a tiny screen and I just couldn't keep up with making enough designs for all of the holiday. I did have one card though that was very popular though. It was a floral design that said "Holy Shit You're Getting Married". It struck me one that I should be making more cards like that and by the end of the day I had the whole concept and branding down for Naughty Florals. I was overflowing with ideas because it felt so much more me.
What are some struggles you had starting your business and how did you over come them?
Photography. I don't consider myself a naturally talented photographer so it took a lot of practice and help from my sister (who is an amazing photographer) to get my photos where they are today. I know I still have a lot of room to get better but it's a work in progress.
Where do you draw inspiration from?
I draw inspiration from everyone around me. I listen to how people talk and what they actually say to come up with the messages that go on my cards and stickers. No! Love is not like a rainbow (sorry Hallmark!).
What motivates you as a maker?
I love following makers I admire on social media. I love to learn their stories and see how they have grown. Often if you go back and look at old photos they were in the same place I am now. It is so inspiring to see how far they have come and it motivates me because I can see that it actually is possible to be a successful maker.
What is a goal you set for yourself as a maker/artist and how did you achieve it?
A goal I set as a Maker was to be in the One of Kind Show. It is something have wanted to do for the past 10 years or so and this year will be my first year in the Winter One of a Kind show! I achieved this by doing a lot of research. I went to the show and chatted with the vendors and asked them tips and tricks about how to get in the show (everyone is super nice and was more then happy to help). The biggest thing I did to help me achieve this was I ACTUALLY APPLIED TO THE SHOW! I almost let fear and doubt get in the way of me applying this year but I actually did it and it paid off!
What is your favorite part of being a maker?
I love that every day is different. You have to learn a lot to make your business grow but it is totally worth it and the days just fly by!
Do you have any tips for new makers/ small business owners?
Deal with your finances. It can seem scary and hard but it it totally worth it. Hire an accountant you can actually talk to. Get your books in order by hiring a bookkeeper or taking some bookkeeping classes. Once you are in charge of your finances you are in charge of your businesses.
What are some hobbies or interests you have outside of your small business?
I love to bake, run, travel and nap!
Share a fun fact about yourself.
