Meet Your Maker- Spunky Owl

This week on MYM we have the lovely Allison from Spunky Owl. Allison sells both patterns &  finished items, as well as running a crochet blog.  Be sure to check out her blog after you read this post as her maker journey is truly inspirational.

Introduce yourself and your business.

Allison Marks, Spunky Owl

How did you launch your business & what made you want to start a small business?

I taught myself how to crochet with the help of YouTube videos and a lot of cuss words and patience. October will be 1 year since I picked up my first crochet hook! I start making small gifts for Christmas, and figured I could sell items to help pay for my yarn addiction. Therefore, in February 2019, I officially launched spunkyowl.com!

What are some struggles you had starting your business and how did you over come them?

My biggest struggle with starting my own business was self-doubt. Because I haven't been crocheting for long, I questioned whether I was good enough to be selling items and writing patterns. However, the maker community is amazingly supportive and encouraging. I eventually got over that doubt and now feel confident in what I have to offer to my customers and fellow makers.

Where do you draw inspiration from?

I draw inspiration from other makers, fashion magazines, Pinterest posts, designers, and such. Sometimes, I make things I haven't seen before but I want for myself.

What motivates you as a maker?

I'm motivated to succeed because this is my passion. Finding something that I could do while battling chronic pain and illnesses was crucial to my well being and sanity. I shared my story on my website, and I would have never thought to do it without feeling the love and support from my maker community. I need this, crochet and small business; I need it to be successful.

What is a goal you set for yourself as a maker/artist and how did you achieve it?

Although I should have long term goals, I don't. I look one season ahead and make small goals. For instance, I want to hit 1K followers on Instagram before the end of October. As I grow, I know I will set bigger goals. For now, I am happy keeping up with my own pace.

What is your favorite part of being a maker?

As a maker, I love meeting other makers! I've met (virtually) some of the best women since becoming a small business owner.

Do you have any tips for new makers/ small business owners?

My advice for other makers/small business owners is never compare yourself with others! Do you! Price your makes/products/services based on what you believe they are worth.

What are some hobbies or interests you have outside of your small business?

Aside from crocheting, I love football! My son plays high school ball, and I am obsessed with the New Orleans Saints. We are season ticket holders, so I love going to home games! Who Dat!

Share a fun fact about yourself.

I love memes and gifs!!! Laughter is my favorite medicine!
